Dishwasher does not start - you can do that
If your dishwasher does not start or if it issues an error message, we will explain the most common causes, why and how you can rectify the behavior.
Inflow problems: dishwasher does not start
Newer devices draw attention to errors with warning signals such as beeping or blinking. If you cannot solve the problem or have an older dishwasher, we will first clarify whether the cause is outside the device. Remember to remove the fuse during any attempt to repair.
- Check whether the socket still supplies the dishwasher with power. Try another one as a test. Also check whether the tap is turned on sufficiently.
- As long as the dishwasher does not start because no water enters the device through the inlet, you should examine the associated hose. To do this, turn off the water and have a bucket and towels ready. The remaining water may leak from the hose. If you do not know exactly which connection is responsible for the water supply, we will explain how to recognize the connections on the dishwasher.
- First remove the hose from the tap connection. If you notice obvious dirt such as lime, you should remove it with a lint-free cloth and vinegar-based cleaning agent. The problem is more often the hose access, which is attached to the dishwasher. Here, residues can accumulate in the sieve, which prevent the dishwasher from being supplied with water. Clean this access too and reconnect the hose to the connections. Make sure that the hose is not kinked.
- If you switch on the appliance again and find that no water is still getting in, you can test pour a bucket of water in before the rinse cycle. If the dishwasher works with it, you can either change the hose or ask a specialist.
Dishwasher does not start due to water pressure
If your water supply does not provide the required or irregular water pressure, the dishwasher will not start.
- This problem occurs especially in old buildings. In another article you will read how to measure your water pressure.
- If you are not a handyman, you should have the water pressure adjusted by a professional.
Problems on the appliance itself: the dishwasher does not start
If you can be sure that your dishwasher receives sufficient water and pressure, you will find the cause on the device itself.
- Some machines have a reset function. If your dishwasher includes such an option, you should start it.
- Depending on the device, you can unscrew and clean individual screens inside the machine. Constipation may be causing the misbehavior.
- Check with the exact model number if other owners are having similar problems. Particularly inexpensive devices have defects in the electronics after only a few years, whereby the repair exceeds the original price.
- Check whether the washing arm can turn or whether the path is blocked by dishes.
- Try if you can start other programs. Refill the salt too. This is particularly important with calcareous water.
- If you still have a guarantee on the dishwasher, you should contact the manufacturer.
