Cut GIF - it's that easy
You can often see animated images in GIF format on the Internet. You can cut them to your liking. You don't even need expensive software for this: the free and popular image editing tool GIMP, for example, easily copes with the format. In this tip, we explain exactly how to proceed.
Crop animated GIFs with GIMP
You can edit any GIF with GIMP, as an example here is an image from the photo show: The 40 best animated GIF images.
- The first step is to open the image with GIMP. In the layer dialog ([CTRL] + [L]) you can see the individual frames of the GIF animation. The top level is already selected by default.
- Now open the toolbox ([CTRL] + [B]) and select the cut tool (marked red in the screenshot).
- Now use the tool to draw a rectangle over the area you want to keep. Then the rest of the area is already darkened (see screenshot).
- If you now double-click in the area you have selected with the left mouse button, all layers will be cut automatically.
- Now you only have to save the image correctly. To do this, click on "File" -> "Export as". Here you can determine the name and location of the animation. Then click on "Export".
- In the next dialog "Export image as GIF" you only have to tick "As animation" and select "Export".
