Open your gimp file. To see the Layers window, go to "Window"> "Dockable Dialogs"> "Layers" in the menu bar.
- Select the corresponding layer in the layer window.
- Click on "Layer" in the menu bar.
- There you select "Transparency" and click on "Add Alpha Channel".
- If your layer already has an alpha channel, select "Remove alpha channel" here if necessary.
