Gimp: Convert image to comic drawing - a guide
With just a few settings, you can use Gimp to convert an image into a comic drawing. We'll show you how it's done.
Turn images into comics with Gimp
You don't need any additional add-ons to convert ordinary images into a comic drawing with Gimp. The individual steps are further explained in the picture gallery.
- Load the image to be edited via "File"> "Open" in Gimp.
- Now duplicate the image layer twice in the layer dialog. You now have three different levels.
- Go to "Tools"> "GEGL Operations" in the menu. Select the "edge-sobel" item under "Operation" and confirm with "OK".
- Now call up the color value correction via "Colors"> "Values". In the "Source values" area, drag the right slider to the left by about half so that the contours are clearly white. Confirm with OK".
- Now select the "Extract fiber" item under "Mode" in the layer dialog. This results in a first comic effect.
- Right-click on the top level in the level area and select the "Unite down" entry in the context menu. Now you have two levels.
- Then change the mode of the level to "Value".
- Finally, you can save the image as usual.
By the way, you can also use Gimp to create graffiti, as we show in another practical tip.
