Gimp: Blend layers - how it works
The image editing program GIMP offers you numerous effects. You can blend layers and create interesting collages. In this practical tip we will show you how.
Blend layers in Gimp
Blending layers in GIMP can give you impressive results. The top level is decisive for the "Overlay" mode.
- In the first step, open the first picture: "File"> "Open".
- Then open a second image, which should serve as the new, top level.
- If this picture is not exactly the same size as the first picture, you should adjust the size under "Picture"> "Scale picture".
- Right-click on the second image and select "Edit"> "Copy visible" from the context menu.
- Now switch to the GIMP window with the first image and right-click in the image and select "Edit"> "Paste as"> "New Layer" from the context menu. The copied image is pasted as a new layer.
- Now select the layer you just created and set it to "Overlay" in the top right.
Change the opacity of the layer
Another option is to set the mode to "Normal" and change the opacity of the layer instead. This gives you more control over the result.
- First repeat steps 1 through 5 above.
- Select the newly created layer with a mouse click and set the desired thickness under "Opacity" in the top right.
