With the free photo editing program Gimp you can change the background of a photo. In our instructions, we will guide you through the individual steps.
Change the picture background with Gimp
- Open an image with "File" that should have a different background. Note that you cannot select a JPEG file because this format cannot reproduce the transparency. If the image only exists as a JPEG, save it as a PNG beforehand.
- The image is now inserted in Gimp and appears in the layer tool on the right as a new layer. Right-click to open the context menu and select "Add Alpha Channel".
- Now click on the lasso symbol on the left in the toolbox. Drive around the object in the picture with the lasso until it is completely framed.
- Go to "Selection" and choose "Invert".
- Now choose "Edit"> "Cut".
- Call up the "Open layers" option via "File". Now select the new background and click on "Open".
- Go to "Window"> "Dockable dialogs"> "Layers" and, if necessary, move the background layer behind the foreground layer in the layer dialog window.
