GIMP: Intelligent scissors - this is how the tool works
With the intelligent scissors or magnetic selection, you can release objects in Gimp in just a few steps. We will show you how to use the tool correctly.
Intelligent scissors in Gimp: How to use the tool properly
You activate the intelligent scissors (magnetic selection) in Gimp either via the scissors symbol in the tool window or via "Tools"> "Selection tools"> "Intelligent scissors".
- With the magnetic selection, click on the edge of the object you want to crop. Now a white dot appears.
- Repeat this step some distance away - again on the side of the object. The intelligent scissors then create a connection between the two points that runs exactly on the edge of the object. Gimp analyzes the color differences in the image and thus defines the connecting lines.
- This will outline the entire object. But make sure that you don't remove the points too far. In these cases, Gimp often works imprecisely. If you drag the individual points, you can correct the selection afterwards.
- When you click the first point again, the entire object is selected. You can now cut, copy or add filters.
Personalize magnetic selection in Gimp
If you are not satisfied with the results of the intelligent scissors, you can adjust the settings in the tool window:
- Smooth edges: Activate this option to smooth the edges of the selection. This is how you create a more precise selection at the end.
- Hide edges: With this setting you hide the edges of the intelligent scissors.
- Interactive border: If this option is activated, you can see directly which part Gimp will select. To do this, hold down the mouse button and do not release it until you are satisfied with the result.
