Gimp: Create perforated sheet background - how it works
With the free image editing program Gimp you can create a perforated sheet background in just a few steps. We'll show you how easy it is.
Perforated sheet design as background in GIMP
With Gimp you can achieve a perforated plate effect.
- Create a new image in Gimp with the background color black.
- Use the fill tool to fill the area with gray. In our example we used the color value # 999999.
- Punch the gray layer with the menu "Filter -> Distort -> Newspaper Printing". We set the cell size to 15 px and separated it according to intensity. Also select an angle of 50 degrees, a round point function and an oversample of 15 for anti-aliasing. Confirm your entry.
Deepen structure for a realistic look
Next, you should deepen the structure. You can do this via "Filters -> Map -> Bump Map". Select linear as the map type and set the checkmark at "Compensate darkening". Azimuth should be set to 135, the elevation angle to 45, the depth to 10 and ambience to 255, everything else to 0. Confirm the settings.
There must be some more dirt
Finally, add some dirt for a realistic look. To do this, create a new, transparent layer. With the menu "Filter -> Render -> Clouds -> Plastic Noise" you create clouds. Now change the layer mode from "Normal" to "Overlay", you get a layer of dirt that makes the perforated plate look realistic.
