Gimp: Clone objects - how it works
With the Gimp image editing program, you can easily clone objects and create completely new images. In this practical tip we will show you how.
How to clone your photos and pictures in Gimp
You can find illustrated instructions in the gallery.
- Download Gimp and install the program. Then run it.
- Click on the "File" tab in the top right corner and select the "Open ..." option. Now import the image you want to clone.
- Move your mouse into the toolbox and select the lasso or the "free selection".
- Now use the lasso to outline the object in the picture that you want to clone.
- Now press the combination "Ctrl + C" on your keyboard. This copies the image to the clipboard. With the key combination "Ctrl + V" your copied object is inserted as a new layer. You can see this in the "Layers" box.
- Select the "Move" tool in the toolbox. Move the mouse over your cloned object and hold down the left mouse button. Then move the mouse freely on the image.
- Now place your cloned object in the place where you want to keep it.
Put the picture together
In order for the cloned object to finally appear on your created image, you have to join the individual layers together.
- To do this, right-click in the "Layers" box to select your cloned layer. Click on "To new level" in the context menu.
- This turns the "Floating Selection" into an "inserted layer". Select this again with a right click and this time click on the "Unite down" option.
- You can now save your image via "File"> "Export as ...".
This tip refers to GIMP 2.8.10. To improve your photos even further, you can use GIMP to create HDR images, for example.
