GIMP: Remove shadows through brightness and contrast
The free image editing software GIMP offers, among other things, the possibility to make a shadow disappear with brightness and contrast. The brightness must be screwed up to compensate for the dark shadows. This will make the selected area pale. Therefore, the contrast must also be increased in order to make the area look real again.
- Select the area of the shadow that you want to remove.
- Go to the "Colors" field in the upper task bar and select "Adjust brightness / contrast".
- Now a window appears. Drag brightness and contrast forward here. How much you need to increase these 2 parameters varies from shadow to shadow. But with a little bit of tact, the right attitude can be found quickly.
- By activating the preview below you can see how your settings affect the image.
- Now press "OK" and the shadow is gone.
GIMP: Remove shadows using cloning functions
With the cloning function - also called stamp - you can also remove shadows. In this case, however, dark image fragments are not lightened, but similar image fragments are placed over the shadow. The prerequisite for this is a similar image section that was not affected by the shadow:
- Again select the area of the shadow you want to have away.
- Find the clone function in the toolbox. This is identified by a beige stamp.
- Now set the size and shape of the stamp in the tool settings.
- Now you have to find a suitable section on the picture, which should then be placed over the shadow.
- To select and fix the position, press "Ctrl" + "left mouse button". That position can of course be changed at any time.
- Now fill in the entire shadow using the left mouse button - and the problem is solved.
