Bellflower: the plant is so poisonous
There is still controversy as to whether the bellflower is poisonous. The plant is used as a remedy. It is not clearly proven whether consumption in humans and animals can lead to poisoning.
Are Bellflower Poisonous Or Not?
To date, it has not been clearly established whether or how toxic the plant is. What is certain is that the consumption is not fatal.
- The bellflower, also known as Campanula, is used in human naturopathy.
- It is known to be diuretic, hemostatic and disinfectant.
- The Institute of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology in Zurich has confirmed that eating is actually not dangerous. Nevertheless, the institute informs that animals should not eat the plant because the effects on different animal species could not be clearly determined.
- The stems, which contain a lot of milk juice, should not be eaten, since incompatibilities can occur.
- According to experts, the strength of the ingredients can vary widely and depends on the different types. The symptoms and reactions to a possible intolerance are correspondingly different in humans.
- In case of intolerance, scratching and burning of the mucous membranes can occur in addition to stomach and intestinal complaints.
- Always keep children and animals away from the flower for safety.
Measures in the event of an intolerance
If you recognize the symptoms mentioned above, take the following measures.
- Drink a glass of water so that your body can absorb liquid and flush out the pollutants. Most of the time it is already done and apart from nausea there are no other symptoms.
- In the unlikely event that your symptoms worsen and other symptoms such as shortness of breath or rapid heartbeat occur, you should contact the emergency services immediately.
- If possible, keep the rest of the bellflower for assessment by the emergency doctor.
- If your pet has eaten the bluebell, also give water and then go to the veterinarian for safety.
