If you are looking for a new email provider, you are spoiled for choice - for example between GMX or Gmail. We have made a comparison between Freemail from GMX and Gmail from Google for you, whereby both email providers also offer paid email accounts.
The GMX Freemail account
- Cost: As already mentioned, the GMX freemail account is free. To do this, however, you have to accept occasional GMX advertising emails.
- Storage space: Against Gmail's storage space offer (15 GB), the 1.5 GB for the freemail account looks quite modest.
- Cloud: However, there is an additional 2 GB of cloud storage space to which you can outsource your emails. You will also receive 4 GB each for free if you install the Mediacenter software and if you install the iOS or Android app.
- Organization: For better mailbox organization, you can create folders for unread emails at GMX and also set up mailing lists for free email from GMX.
- Calendar and address book: With GMX you have access to an address book and a calendar both in the web application and in the apps.
- Spam filter: Freemail has an upstream spam filter.
- App: Thanks to the app for both the iPhone and the Android phone, you can easily access your mails on the go.
Gmail from Google
- Cost: Gmail from Google is also free. Here, too, you are not completely spared from advertising.
- Storage: Google lures you with a storage space of 15 GB.
- Cloud: By linking its services such as Gmail and Google Drive, Google allows you to do and save online office work.
- Organization: In addition to the option to create your own folders, you can also create a custom design at Gmail.
- Calendar and address book: The same applies here as for the Google cloud: by linking all of its services, an address book is available to you in Gmail as well as a calendar.
- Spam filter: Gmail protects you from annoying advertisements or questionable emails with a spam filter.
- App: It goes without saying that Google offers you a practical app for your Android phone or iPhone.
Gmail or GMX: security
Both GMX and Gmail use the latest security standards. Pishing attacks allow hackers to intercept emails and crack your account with a lot of effort despite two-factor authentication. But both providers have special safety precautions:
- With its new "Advanced Protection" feature, Google is probably the safest provider in the world. A USB stick for the computer and a Bluetooth chip for mobile devices serve as keys. Without the key, hackers will be unable to log into your account. This feature creates a high level of security (more details on this). However, the standard security features of Gmail and GMX are completely sufficient for private individuals.
- With GMX you can send your mails encrypted end-to-end. This means that the mails are encrypted on the GMX server and are only decrypted at the recipient. For example, hackers who intercept emails on the go cannot simply read them.
- Unlike Google, GMX has all of its servers in Germany. This means that your data is protected by the strict German data protection law.
Conclusion: GMX or Gmail
Both free email accounts can be used.
- If you value a large storage space, the option of personalization and a first-class design are in better hands with Gmail.
- In terms of data protection and security, GMX scores with the servers in Germany and the end-to-end encryption. But when you're ready to turn your mailbox into a high-security prison, try the Gmail security tips.
