Gmail or Outlook - the comparison
We took a close look at two free webmail providers: With our comparison, you can find out whether Gmail or Outlook is better for you. All characteristics are considered in which the providers differ significantly.
Outlook vs. Gmail: Primary email addresses and email aliases
The first difference is the number of possible primary addresses and alias addresses:
- With Outlook you have a primary address (outlook.de) and can set up to 10 alias addresses.
- With Gmail you also have only one primary address (gmail.de), but you can set up up to 30 alias addresses for free.
Outlook vs. Gmail: storage space and attachment size
The mail providers also differ in the available storage space and the possible size of files that you attach.
- Outlook offers you 15 GB of storage space. You can send file attachments up to a size of 25 MB directly, larger files up to 10 GB are shared via an onedrive link.
- Gmail offers 15 GB of free storage space and enables file attachments with a maximum size of 25 MB.
Gmail or Outlook? Polling procedures and security functions
The providers do not differ in the retrieval procedure: Both offer IMAP and POP as retrieval procedures. Both providers have also integrated all important security functions such as login encryption, spam and virus protection. However, Google scores with a new security feature:
- With the "Advanced Protection Program" Google is probably the safest mail provider in the world for private individuals.
- The encryption works with a USB stick for the computer or a Bluetooth chip for mobile devices.
- Logging in is not possible without the key on the stick or chip. This makes it almost impossible for hackers to break the account.
Apps for tablets and smartphones
Both providers offer apps that allow you to use all functions on mobile devices.
- Outlook has apps for Android and iOS.
- Gmail offers apps for Android, iOS and Windows Phone.
Gmail vs. Outlook - a conclusion
On the whole, Gmail has more to offer: more alias addresses and apps for all operating systems. However, Outlook scores with the possibility of sending large file attachments via OneDrive. So if you send and receive a lot of large mails, you can use Outlook. If you want to manage your mail account on your mobile phone and need a lot of alias addresses, Gmail is a good choice.
