Gmail: Red question mark - what is it?
You may see a red question mark in Gmail soon. Google introduced this symbol to make it easier for you to recognize dubious mails. You can find all the information in this article.
Red question mark in Gmail: Google presents new icons
As part of the "Safer Internet Day", Google presented some news for Gmail:
- Small symbols will make it easier for you to decide in future whether a message is real or fake.
- Among other things, a small red question mark could appear next to the sender. This is then at the place where you would otherwise see the sender / recipient's avatar image.
- This means that the sender could not be authenticated. All reputable mail providers sign your mails. This enables you as the recipient to find out whether the sender is serious.
- Of course, the email does not necessarily have to be dangerous. For example, Google automatically classifies certain algorithms with weak keys as "unsigned". But be especially careful when you receive an email with the red question mark.
- If you see an unknown sender with a red question mark, you should be skeptical. If in doubt, you'd better delete the mail, don't reply to it, and don't click on any attachments. You should also never send sensitive data.
