If you want to protect your mailbox at GMX against unauthorized access, you should activate two-factor authentication. You need an authentication app for this.
Activate two-factor authentication at GMX - the preparations
Two-factor authentication prevents unauthorized persons from easily hacking your GMX email account.
- To activate two-factor authentication, you need a so-called authentication app.
- This app gives you a temporary security code every time you log in to your GMX account.
- For example, you can use the free Android app Google Authenticator.
- Alternatively, however, any other authentication app is also suitable.
Set up secure access to the mail account
If you have loaded an appropriate app, log in to GMX with your access data.
- Under the "Start" tab in the left-hand menu column, select "Security" and then "Two-factor authentication".
- The setup wizard opens. Click on "Start setup". In the next screen, first enter the password for your email address and click again on "Start now".
- The next step is to verify your mobile phone number. If you have not yet stored a mobile phone number in the account, enter it in the corresponding field.
- Then click on "Request SMS". You will receive a confirmation code, which you enter in the appropriate field and then click on "Next" again.
- Now the authentication app is used. This will scan the displayed QR code. The app then shows you a six-digit code that you enter in GMX. Then click "Next" again.
- You will receive a secret key. With this you can access your mailbox at any time in an emergency.
- Important: keep this secret key in a safe place. You can either copy it or download it as a PDF and then print it out.
- In the next step you will be asked to check your personal information again. Click once again on "Next" and then on "Activate now".
- Your GMX mailbox is now protected with two-factor authentication.
