Google AMP - what is it? Easily explained
Google AMP has the potential to improve mobile surfing for every smartphone user. Few people know exactly what Google AMP is. We clarify it.
What is Google AMP?
- The abbreviation "AMP" stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages. With the project, Google wants to make the mobile versions of websites leaner so that users consume less data and the pages load faster. Google provides the technology free of charge for every website operator.
- The project does not affect the desktop versions of websites. The Internet speed on the computer is comparatively high and is available via flat rate without restrictions. Mobile on the smartphone, however, every user makes sure that he uses as little data volume as possible.
When is Google AMP coming?
- Google AMP is scheduled for launch on February 24, 2016. At the beginning, well-known websites such as the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal and BuzzFeed should publish some content as an AMP version.
- The source code for Google AMP is public and can be used by anyone. Websites like WordPress have already integrated Google AMP. So every hobby website operator can use Google AMP.
- Facebook plans to publish a similar feature called "Instant Articles" in April 2016. Since Google is in direct competition here, AMP articles are not preferred in Google search, but are marked visibly.
