Google Chrome: characters in the address bar simply explained
In the address bar of Google Chrome you will find a number of different characters next to the Internet address. We explain what these symbols mean in this practical tip.
Google Chrome: padlock or page character in the address bar
Google Chrome’s address bar can display five different characters next to the Internet address. We have summarized their meaning for you:
- White page character: If you see this character in the address bar, it is a normal HTTP connection to the website without encrypting the connection.
- Green lock symbol: The green lock symbol shows that the website has a valid and trustworthy SSL certificate and that a secure connection to the website has been established.
- Orange sign with exclamation mark: This sign is displayed if the website has not sent an SSL certificate to Chrome. This is normal only for normal HTTP websites.
- Lock symbol with warning triangle: The lock symbol with warning triangle is displayed if the server has sent an SSL certificate, but this is only secured with a weak encryption level. The connection is encrypted, but you should not enter any personal information on the website you are visiting.
- Red padlock: An error with the certificate of the website was found with this sign. It is possible that someone can read the transmitted content. Be very careful here and do not provide any personal information.
