Anyone who has a Google account is already relatively well advised with Google Drive. However, alternatives sometimes offer more storage space and additional functions. The information in the headings shows you the free storage space. Each service also offers additional storage space for a fee.
Cloud storage with "Dropbox" - 2 to 20 GB
- The Dropbox service only offers you 2 GB of storage space. However, with a little effort, up to 20 GB are possible for free.
- Storage space: You can increase your storage space for free. You do this through various campaigns and friendship invitations.
- Advantage: Drobpox has a lot of users, so you can share Dropbox folders with friends, family and colleagues and thus share all your desired files.
- Mobility: You can use the service not only in the browser, but also as a desktop application and as a mobile app.
Microsoft's Google Drive alternative "OneDrive" - 7 to 25 GB
- If you already have a Microsoft account or a Windows Live ID, you can easily use the Microsoft OneDrive (formerly: SkyDrive). No further registration is required for this. As with Google Drive, the service is seamlessly inserted into your account.
- If you had such a Microsoft account before March 2012, you will now even get 25 GB of free storage space. Otherwise, it's still 7 GB.
- In combination with Windows 8 and a Microsoft account, the SkyDrive is definitely worth it and is a good alternative to Google Drive. You can also use SkyDrive via a desktop application and in a mobile app (Android or iOS).
Cloud service "Box.com" as competition to Google Drive - 5 GB
- With Box.com's online storage service, you can conveniently save your files in the cloud and share them with your friends.
- Disadvantage: You can only upload files up to a size of 100 MB. Longer videos or entire films can therefore not be saved online.
Filesharer and online hard drive "Mega" - 50 GB
- Kim Dotcom's new Mega service has been online since January 2013. Again, as with Megaupload, it is a file share service. But it can also be used as an online hard drive.
- Your files are encrypted when uploaded, so the service itself does not know what your data is about.
- The biggest advantage of Mega is the comparatively ample storage space. With 50 GB free, the service is hard to beat. At the moment, however, an app for mobile access is still missing.
- You can find more information about the service in the practical tip "Is Mega legal?"
BitTorrent as a different drive alternative
- With "BitTorrent" you have theoretically unlimited storage space and that completely free of charge. The storage space is limited to the memory of your device.
- Small catch: BitTorrent is more of a synchronization service because there is no cloud of its own. This is because files are synchronized directly from device to device. The sharing provider even supports NAS devices.
- BitTorrent is a different, but by no means worse drive alternative.
Save in "Livedrive" - trial version with 2, 000 GB
- With the Google Drive alternative "Livedrive" you get up to 2000 GB of storage - unfortunately not for free. However, there are discounts and you can cancel at any time.
- There is a 14-day free trial period for the offers. During this time you can get a taste of the clear and easy-to-use program. However, the design is reminiscent of Windows XP - so it's a bit dusty.
Google Drive alternative "SafeSync": Cloud storage up to 500 GB
- With the "SafeSync" cloud storage there is no limit to files, formats and transfer options.
- Simply register, confirm your offer with your email address and get started. It couldn't be easier.
- You can find more information in our provider comparison: SafeSync vs. Livedrive.
JustCloud - Cloud with up to unlimited storage space
- After the 14-day trial version of "JustCloud", you can look forward to many discount offers.
- Hook: The German translation will make you smile a few times and security is not good either: You do not need to verify the email address so that third parties can create accounts with other email addresses.
"Strato HiDrive" - large account for up to 5, 000 GB
- With "Strato HiDrive" you can choose between offers for yourself or for your company. Because of the sluggish 20 GB of storage for 1.49 euros per month (excluding setup fees of 9.90 euros) you can also buy 5, 000 GB for your company. You will also receive 100 user accounts and 20 admin accounts.
- For an account, Strato needs your address, online and private data. Incomprehensibly, this also includes your mobile phone number.
- The service is simple, clear and even available for your smartphone. Unfortunately, you have to manually synchronize your data.
- You can read all further information about the Google Drive alternative in the article "Strato HiDrive in the test".
