Both Picasa successor Google Photos and Flicker allow photos and videos to be saved. You can find out the differences between the two services here.
Picasa successor Google Images: Free and easy to use
The Picasa photo service was a Google project, but has since been replaced by Google Photos.
- As with Picasa, you also have 15 GB of storage available with Google Photos, which the service shares with other Google services. There is no limit to how many pictures you can upload. However, a free Google account is required to use the service.
- Unlike Picasa, which primarily supported Google+, you can upload images uploaded to Google Photos directly to Facebook or Twitter. You can also share your photos and albums with your friends and relatives. Either via a generated link or directly by email (see picture).
- You can also edit your pictures with Google Photos, but not to the same extent as Picasa allowed. However, Google Photos offers a solid selection of filters, the ability to rotate and crop images, and adjust exposure and color saturation. Simply click on the image you want to edit and then on the "Edit" button in the top right corner, on the right of the "Share" button.
- If you don't want to do without Picasa's image processing capabilities, you can find an old version of the program in the CHIP download area.
The Flickr social network
Flickr has been a part of Yahoo since 2005, but was sold to SmugMug in 2018. This is now accompanied by some changes in how the photo storage service, which more resembles a social network, will work in the future.
- One change that should welcome many users is that Flicker is no longer linked to a Yahoo account.
- However, users with a free account may only upload a maximum of 1000 images to Flicker from January 2019. If you have such an account and more pictures, you should download them as soon as possible and save them elsewhere. As of February 5th, all content above the limit will be deleted, starting with the oldest.
- If you want to continue using Flickr in full, you will have to pay for the Premuim subscription in the future. Cost $ 50 a year. You get unlimited storage space, extended statistics on your photos and videos, as well as discounts on products such as photo editing software or photo books from certain providers.
- Flickr supports all major social networks, such as Facebook or Twitter. You can also conveniently send the pictures by email.
- The Flickr web app makes uploading your pictures even easier. There is also an official Android and iPhone app for Flickr.
Conclusion: Google photos for private use, Flickr for photography enthusiasts
Google Photos and Flickr are very different. Which program is more suitable for you depends entirely on what is important to you in a photo storage service.
- Especially if you are simply looking for a place to store your vacation photos, Google Photos is the best solution. The service is free and has more than enough storage space for private use.
- After you only get space for 1000 pictures with the free account on Flickr, the service is really only worth it if you pay for the pro subscription. This is not necessarily the best solution for private use. Hobby and professional photographers should definitely consider the paid subscription and the associated advantages.
