Google Maps as route planner - the best tips
If you have a new destination on the map, you don’t have to google for a long time for a route planner - Google Maps can do that too. Here are some tips to help you get there quickly and easily.
New design - the functions remain
If you visit the website "maps.google.de", you will get a full-screen map of your current location. So much more of the screen is used compared to previous versions. However, the functionality remains the same: Similar to the mobile apps, you can now access the route function via the small arrow at the top left.
The basics in Google Maps
Once you get used to the new design, the rest is no longer a hurdle:
- First click on the small route arrow as described above.
- Enter the start and finish and plan a stopover as required. This is easily done via "Add target". Alternatively, you can simply click a point on the map to set a goal.
- Now various route options will be delivered to you straight away: In the dialog window at the top left, first select the small car to display road connections. The suggested route including driving information appears in blue on the map, alternative routes are shown in gray. Clicking on this changes to their view. Another click selects the respective route.
- Particularly practical: If you want to modify the suggested route a bit, just hold down the left mouse button and drag it over the desired location. Google Maps then automatically adjusts the driving instructions.
- To display the associated driving instructions, select "Route" in the dialog window on the left. The view is divided into a map on the right and the instructions on the left. In this view you will also find the print option at the top right.
With an account, you rediscover Google Maps
Even Google Maps is by no means standing still: Updates keep bringing new functions. The current version offers many useful functions for users with a Google account. If you are not too concerned about data protection and information collection, you can personalize the card program according to your own ideas.
- The "Register" button is always on the top right. The login is the same as for your Android device or your GMail account.
- After logging in, Google Maps, for example, saves your frequently searched destinations - such as "work" or "at home". The next time you access it, all you have to do is enter your new destination and the route from your home location will be calculated.
- For example, if you are looking for a specific restaurant along your route, you will also be offered many similar offers that you could try. So Maps becomes a targeted leisure planner.
- If you need a better overview, use Google Earth and Street View. You will find the two services directly at the bottom of the screen.
Google's route planner is also available as an app
If you want to use maps on the go and even let Google's map service navigate you, we recommend the app variant. This is now almost identical to the desktop version.
- Whether Android smartphone or iPhone - the app is available for both devices.
- It is just as intuitive as the browser variant: the route function is hidden behind the arrow similar to a street sign. The app can always access your current location via GPS and you only have to enter the destination. With an existing internet connection, you can even be navigated there directly.
