Uninstall Google Maps app - does it work?
If Google Maps causes problems or consumes the necessary resources, you can uninstall the app - provided you have rooted your smartphone. As of Android 4.0, you can also deactivate Google Maps without root rights via the settings menu. We present both options in this practical tip.
Deactivate Google Maps on Android 4.4 KitKat
Google Maps is one of the so-called system apps, so it is pre-installed on the device and is part of the operating system. Without root access, the app can therefore only be deactivated:
- Open the "Settings" on your smartphone.
- Tap on the "Apps" sub-item and swipe left in the next menu to display all apps.
- Select "Maps" here and tap the "Deactivate" button. Google Maps will now be hidden on your device and all associated data will be deleted.
- You can also reactivate the Google Maps via the app overview: Scroll to the end, select Google Maps there and tap "Activate".
Delete Google Maps from a rooted smartphone
If you have a rooted smartphone, you have extended access to the system and thus also to the pre-installed apps. The uninstallation works best with "Root Uninstaller":
- Install the app on your smartphone.
- Start "Root Uninstaller" and check "Maps".
- Tap the "Uninstall Selected Apps" button and confirm the next window with "OK". Google Maps will then be removed from your phone.
