Google Maps not only eats a lot of battery, but also has a high data consumption. So that you won't soon be without mobile internet, we clarify how much data the app eats on iPhones and Android smartphones.
Data usage from Google Maps on iPhone and Android smartphones
- With Google Maps on the iPhone or Android smartphone, you consume up to 3.1 MB per minute with active use. At least when you zoom into the map to take a closer look at the route or call up other map sections in Google Maps. Data is called up all the time and this costs you a lot of data.
- If you use the cell phone as a navigation system, however, you consume less data: around 2 MByte per minute. Because Google Maps only shows you the street and does not have to load the map material to the right and left of the street.
- In addition: once the app has loaded the road network of the route, it only searches for your GPS position on this route. The navigation therefore eats less data again. To save the data volume, you should save some maps with frequently used road networks offline. We show you exactly how to do this in this guide.
- Alternatively, you can try other offline navigation apps that use less data.
