GoogleMail: Can I change my email address?

Unfortunately, you cannot change your Google address. However, you can reserve a new address and connect it to your old account. We'll do this using the example of Bernd, who previously had the googlemail account "chippy" and now wants to change it to " ". If you already have a second email address, but don't always want to search through different mailboxes, simply create a Gmail alias. We'll show you how in the last paragraph.
Create a new google email address
Log in to your existing Googlemail account and go to the Google account creation page.
- Enter all relevant information in the fields. Bernd of course looks for the address " ".
- Enter your previous googlemail address below under "Your current email address" - in the example this is " ".
- Check the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
- Click on "Next Step".
- Click through the next steps until you are in your Googlemail inbox.
You should have received an email confirming the creation of a new googlemail address.
Connect the googlemail accounts
Now you can use the new address as the default for your emails by connecting the two accounts.
- Go to the gear in the top right of your old Googlemail account and then go to "Settings".
- Go to the "Accounts" tab at the top.
- Now click on "Add another email address" under "Send as". A pop-up appears in which you enter your new address, in our example as Bernd and the new address " ".
- Click on "Next step".
- Now confirm that Googlemail sends the mail to the new address and close the window.
Confirm new Gmail account
Log in to your new Googlemail account now. You should have received a confirmation with the subject "Gmail confirmation - send message as ".
- Open the mail and click on the link.
- A new window opens, confirming that the confirmation was successful.
Activate forwarding
Now we set up a forwarding so that you can also receive the emails from your new account safely. To do this, go back to Settings via the gear wheel at the top right.
- Click the "Forwarding and POP / IMAP" tab.
- Click "Add Forwarding Address".
- Fill in the old address in the popup and click on "Next".
- Check that you have spelled the email address correctly and click "Next" again.
- Agree to the sending of the confirmation code.
Confirmation of forwarding
Now log back into your old account. You should have received an email from Google with the verification code.
- Open the mail.
- Click on the given link.
- A window opens again, telling you that the confirmation was successful.
- Now you have to go back to the new Honululu account and there again in the settings.
- Click the "Forwarding and POP / IMAP" tab again. There you activate the permanent forwarding of your mails to the old address.
Set "Send as"
And now the last step so that you can also send emails from your new email address. Log out of the new account one last time and log into the old account. Go to "Settings" via the gear wheel.
- Click the "Accounts" tab.
- Your new email address should now be included in the "Send as" area.
- Click "Set as Default" on the right.
New googlemail address ready!
Now write new mails automatically with your new address. The advantage: You can still send mails from your old mail address by clicking on the sender in the editor.

If you want to import your old mails into the new account, Google will help you here. But be careful: it can happen that your labels are lost in the process.
