If you want to save the money for a dashcam, you can simply use an old GoPro as a dashcam. In this practical tip, we will show you how to do it.
Instructions: Use GoPro as a dash cam
- First you need a suitable housing for the GoPro. In many cases, this already exists. You can get a suction cup for the GoPro for less than 10 euros. This will secure the camera to the windshield or dashboard.
- So that you do not run out of juice while driving, the GoPro should be charged again or permanently connected to the power. A 12V adapter and an additional USB cable are also available from Amazon for less than 10 euros.
- To record, use the loop function under the name "video loop". The camera continuously records videos of the desired length and deletes the oldest recordings as soon as the storage space is full. So you only have to start the recording before the journey and otherwise take care of nothing.
GoPro as a dashcam: disadvantages at a glance
- A GoPro can therefore easily be used as a dash cam, but this is not really recommended. Since a GoPro is not cheap, you should at least stow it in the glove compartment after every ride.
- Alternatively, you can use an old cell phone as a dash cam. Among other things, this enables you to log the speed. This can be very helpful in a legal dispute.
