A GPT partition can usually be deleted directly via the Windows disk management. In some cases, however, the partition is protected so that it does not work so easily. In this case you have to use the DiskPart command line tool. We will help you and show you the individual steps.
Delete GPT partition via disk management
First, you should try to delete the GPT partition using Windows Disk Management. Important : Deleting the wrong partition can result in data loss. In addition, Windows stops working if you delete the boot partition.
- Open the Windows Control Panel by clicking the Windows button and entering "Control Panel". Then click on "Administration". If you use the category view, you must first click on "System and Security".
- Then open the "Computer Management" and switch to the "Disk Management" area.
- Right-click on the GPT partition, select "Delete Volume ..." and follow the instructions.
- You can now create a new partition as usual.
Delete GPT partition with DiskPart
Unfortunately, this procedure does not always work. Alternatively, delete the partition using the DiskPart command line tool:
- Press the key combination [Win] + [R] and enter "cmd" (without quotation marks) to open the command prompt.
- Type in the "diskpart" command (without the quotation marks) and press [Enter]. Confirm the security prompt of the user account control with "Yes", whereupon a new window opens.
- In the new window, enter the "list disk" command (without the quotation marks). Then press [Enter] again.
- Now select the appropriate hard disk by entering the "select disk" command (without quotation marks) followed by the disk number.
- "List partition" shows you all partitions on the selected hard disk.
- with "select partition" followed by the partition number you select the corresponding partition.
- with "delete partition" delete the partition. On the other hand, if you want to delete all information from the partition, enter "clean".
Note: Keep in mind that with both methods, all data stored on the partition will be lost. You can also convert a GPT hard drive to MBR, as we show on the next page.
