Graphics card gets too hot - what can I do?
This guide shows you what you can do if your graphics card gets too hot.
Graphics card too hot - so go to the hardware
- First, check that the graphics card coolers and all other fans and coolers in your PC are working properly. If individual components are defective, repair or replace them.
- Clean the inside of your computer, including the graphics card and heat sink, from dust and dirt - preferably carefully with a vacuum cleaner or a compressed air spray. Here you will find specific tips for cleaning the PC fan.
- Also make sure that all components of your computer have been properly connected.
Graphics card overheated - software settings
- Use software to measure temperature. "GPU-Z" or "FurMark" are suitable for this.
- In the event of noticeably high temperatures - especially without heavy loads from games or similar software - you should either have the device checked by a specialist and replace it if necessary, or purchase an additional heat sink.
- If you regularly push the graphics card to its limits, it is quite possible that the GPU will overheat. In games or graphics-hungry programs, you may want to lower the graphics settings - for example, by changing the resolution or 3D rendering options.
- If your graphics card overheats in spite of the cooler working and without great stress from games or similar, you should send it in and have it replaced if necessary.
It is also recommended that you check your graphics card for errors. Instructions for this can be found in the next practical tip.
