Graphics cards: this is how they work

Graphics cards are circuit boards that are installed in the PC and guarantee the creation of images, for example in computer games. Their structure and how they work are explained in this article.
Graphics cards work according to this principle
The basic function of a graphics card is to convert the data from the main processor so that it can then be displayed as an image on your monitor.
- For this purpose, software outputs a signal, which the main processor, the so-called CPU, executes and calculates the image.
- The graphics card processes a program code with commands and instructions that influence the image display.
- Finally, it passes this image information on to the operating system.
- The graphics card converts a letter code into a readable character that consists of many small pixels.
- Computer games are an example in which a graphics card has a key role.
Structure of a graphics card
Graphics cards consist of the following components:
- The internal RAM ("random access memory") saves the running processes and programs for a short time. Depending on the requirements and complexity of the graphics card, the memory capacity varies from 256 MB to 2048 MB.
- The connections (digital or analog) connect the graphics card to the screen.
- Powerful graphics cards usually also have a built-in fan so that the components do not overheat and become damaged.
Difference between graphics unit and graphics card
While graphics cards are connected to the PC as an external component, graphics units are integrated in the computer and can use the working memory of the PC. Their function is the same as that of graphics cards. You should also output images. However, there are differences in the design and in the areas of application.
- Since the graphics unit does not require any other components to output graphics, it is characterized by shorter cable routes and lower energy consumption. A disadvantage, however, is their lower performance.
- Graphics units are often used in laptops.
