If a file exceeds 25 MByte, most freemail providers stop. You can find out how to send large files in this practical tip.
Send files via cloud and file hoster
File hosts and clouds are the ultimate solution against the limits of email providers. With one click you can send the download link of an uploaded file to friends and business partners. However, you always have to create a user account first. The individual services offer this storage capacity:
- Dropbox: Here you can use up to 2 GB of storage space for free and expand it to up to 20 GB through the recruit friends project.
- Skydrive: The hoster from Microsoft offers you 7 GB free of charge for your data. For users who registered before March 2012, it is even 25 GB.
- Mega: With the Mega Filehoster you get free 50 GB of storage space for your data - a currently unbeatable offer. There is also clever password protection for the files.
- Amazon Cloud and iCloud: If you want to use the online retailer Amazon or Apple's iCloud, you will get 5 GB free of charge. Further upgrades are chargeable.
Send large files without registration
- You can send files with a maximum size of 2 GB at "WeTransfer" without any registration. You can send this and the message to up to 13 different e-mail addresses.
- Alternatively, files up to 2 GB in size can also be sent with "DropSend". However, this is only possible five times a month.
- You can also send files up to 1 GB in size with Send.Firefox. After the upload you will receive a download link that is valid for 24 hours.
- TransferXL: You can send files of up to 5 GB with TransferXL with secure end-to-end encryption. You have 10 GB free per day - there is more with a paid upgrade.
Tip: home network and USB
If the computers are on the same network, you can also transfer the files via the (W) LAN connection within the home network. This has a shorter transmission duration and independence from cloud providers. Alternatively, you can also use a PC-to-PC connection via USB if necessary. More information can be found here.
