If Grub was installed incorrectly, you have to restore it. Grub installation errors are rare, but they do happen sometimes. You often lose access to the installed Linux distribution. To get it back, Grub has to work again. The restoration is not complex and can be solved in different ways. We'll show you how it works.
Restore Grub with "Super Grub Disk"
The easiest way is via the software "Super Grub Disk":
- Download the appropriate software from the official "Super Grub Disk" website and install it on a CD or USB stick. If you have any problems, we will help you here.
- Now boot into your installation medium.
- Select automatic repair from the "Super Grub Disk" menu.
- The program is now working and you should have access to your operating systems as usual.
Recover Grub with Ubuntu Live CD
If the first solution does not work or you still have an installation CD at hand, you can repair it using the console:
- Create an Ubuntu Live CD or a bootable USB stick. Here you will find the 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
- Boot from the CD or stick into the desktop environment of Ubuntu.
- Open a terminal. Now enter the following command lines:
- sudo mount / dev / sda2 / mnt
- sudo grub-install --root-directory = / mnt / dev / sda
- Grub is now being repaired and should then work as usual again.
