Washing clothes is a routine, everyday task in the household. However, errors often occur that cost money over time and can actually be easily avoided. Read more about this in this article.
Washing clothes - you should avoid these mistakes
Sure, washing clothes is an everyday process for which hardly anyone develops a deeper passion. Nevertheless, you should not just carelessly stuff the laundry into the washing machine. This protects your clothes in the long run, you save electricity and the washing machine will also thank you.
- The washing day already practiced by our grandmothers still makes sense today, if for another reason. If you use the washing machine several times in succession, it does not have to heat up again and again, but uses the existing residual heat.
- A common mistake is that the washing temperature is set too high. In addition, this is a mistake that really goes into the money in the long run. If the clothes are not heavily soiled, they can be cleaned easily with today's detergents at 30 to 40 degrees. A higher temperature is only recommended for cases of illness, so that all pathogens are reliably eliminated. Otherwise, it is sufficient to run a washing cycle at a high temperature at regular intervals to destroy any germs. Occasionally, you should run an empty vinegar wash.
- Another common mistake, which in the long run becomes quite expensive and also pollutes the environment, is the wrong dosage of detergent. Mostly too much detergent is used. You can find out the water hardness in your area from your water supplier. You will find the appropriate dosage on the detergent pack.
- A bulky washing machine makes no more sense than a half-full one. So that the laundry is clean, an upright hand should have a comfortable space between the contents and the drum. If the drum is too full, the laundry will not be rinsed properly. The result is residues of dirt and detergent on clothing. In addition, you risk long-term drum damage.
- When filling the washing machine, make sure that all zips are closed. Otherwise, it quickly happened that a piece of clothing gets caught on it and is then damaged during the spin cycle.
- The spin cycle should not be set so high, especially in summer. Take the opportunity and let your clothes dry in the garden. This saves your clothes and ultimately saves electricity.
- You can also protect the color of dark clothes by turning them upside down and using special detergents.
- You can completely do without fabric softener. It is counterproductive, especially for towels, because the fabric softener makes them considerably less absorbent. You can replace the fabric softener with lemon juice. Put about two tablespoons of lemon juice in the fabric softener compartment. Thanks to the lemon juice, the towels remain very absorbent. In addition, your laundry gets a pleasantly fresh scent and any surfactant residues are removed. By the way, the lemon juice ensures that your washing machine does not scale.
