Use your cell phone as a WiFi repeater - so it'll work
If the WiFi signal from your router does not reach the computer, the cell phone can serve as a repeater and form a practical bridge. We summarize the best options in this article.
WiFi repeater via USB
Note: If you have an iPhone, you need a jailbreak and the "PdaNet" app for all variants. Since the app violates the agreements of the app store, you can only download it from the developer page. Read how to jailbreak your iPhone in this article.
- If you receive the WLAN signal with your cell phone, you can pass it on to the computer with a USB cable: Connect your cell phone to the WLAN.
- Then connect your cell phone to the PC with a USB cable.
- Then activate "USB tethering" (Android) in the settings.
Amplify signal via Bluetooth
You can also use the Bluetooth connection to surf wirelessly.
- Connect your cell phone to the WiFi.
- Under "Tethering & mobile hotspot", tick "Bluetooth tethering" (Android).
- You then have to search for and connect to the mobile phone via Bluetooth on the PC (note: on Windows XP, the file tetherxp.inf must be installed first).
Improve WiFi via app
So far, there are hardly any solutions to this problem, since smartphones can generally only establish one WLAN connection at a time. If you have a rooted Android smartphone, you can use the "fqrouter2" app.
- Install fqrouter2 on your smartphone. Since the app is not available in the Playstore, you have to download the APK file and install it manually.
- After starting the app, you must first grant root access.
- When the program has loaded everything, tap or swipe left to "Full Power".
- Then scroll down to "Wifi Repeater" and enter the password and name of the hotspot under "Config". Finally, activate the WLAN by sliding the switch to "ON".
- If the green "ON" appears, search for the WLAN hotspot on the PC and enter the password you have just selected.
Unfortunately, using a smartphone as a WiFi repeater is not yet technically mature. So just try to position the router better or to adjust the antenna more precisely. The best tips for this can be found in the article "Suppressing WLAN". Our instructions are based on the Google Nexus 5.
