Criminals can hack not only your computer, but also your cell phone. We show you how to protect your smartphone from hacker attacks.
iOS or Android: which is safer against hacks?
- If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you don't have to worry much about hackers. The system is built very closed, so a hack is currently not realistic. Only jailbroken devices are partially vulnerable.
- Unfortunately, the situation is different on Android smartphones. The majority of smartphone viruses were developed for Android. Since the operating system is very open, hackers can also quickly get into it.
Jailbreak and root: tickets for hackers
- With a jailbreak or root access, you can undo individual security mechanisms of your iOS or Android smartphone. This allows you to install additional apps free of charge, however, making your smartphone easy prey.
- Even if jailbreaking or rooting brings many advantages, you lose many functions that serve security. Hacking the device is even easier for potential attackers.
How to protect yourself from hacker attacks
- Updates: Regularly update the firmware. So your smartphone always stays on the newest security level.
- Apps: Android users and users of a jailbroken or rooted device in particular should be careful when installing apps. If you don't get them from the usual app store, they could contain viruses.
- WLAN: Only connect to password-protected WLANs. Surf over public WiFi, quickly invite hackers on a tour of your smartphone.
- Bluetooth: Another security gap is in Bluetooth connectivity. This is where hackers in your immediate area can connect without even realizing it. Therefore, turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it. This also saves a lot of battery.
- Messages: Under no circumstances open links from e-mails or SMS messages whose sender you do not know. You should delete MMS messages from unknown contacts directly. This also applies to spam mails.
- Protection: Virus protection is particularly recommended on Android smartphones. You can get good and free protection from the apps Avast Mobile Security & Antivirus, Kaspersky Internet Security, Bitdefender Antivirus Free and Avira Antivirus Security.
