Mobile phone on the plane: is this allowed?
Until the end of 2013, the use of cell phones and other electrical devices on the plane was prohibited. However, the regulations have been relaxed over the past two years. We'll tell you what's allowed and what's not.
Mobile phone use on the plane: Allowed since mid-2014
- Cell phones and other electronic devices such as laptops, tablets or MP3 players had to be switched off for a long time. The reason for this was a possible malfunction of the aircraft electronics.
- The strict ban has been lifted since the end of 2013. The European Aviation Safety Authority (EASA) sees no connection between technical problems and mobile phone use.
- Mobile phones and other electronic devices may be used during the flight, but calling is still prohibited at most airlines.
- Even if cell phone use is permitted, you should switch your cell phone to flight mode for safety reasons. At normal altitude, the likelihood that you will have reception is low anyway.
- Flight mode must be activated at take-off and landing. This switches off mobile data and the telephone function. Electronic devices without flight mode must be switched off.
- Despite the changed EASA guidelines, the regulation on the subject of cell phone use lies with the individual airlines. So it may happen that you are not allowed to use your cell phone during a flight.
