If you were called by an unknown cell phone number, there are several ways to find out who called you. One way is to use a free app. We'll show you exactly how that works and what other options are available.
Search for unknown mobile number using the reverse search app
The easiest way to find out who has a cell phone number is to search backwards in the phone book. All you have to do is enter the mobile phone number or phone number in a phone book app with reverse search. You will then see who the number belongs to. The free app from dasoertliche.de helps, for example.
- Download the free local app and install it.
- After the start screen, the menu appears. Tap on the input field "Who or what are you looking for?".
- The standard search opens. You can select the reverse search as a tab in the top right (see picture).
- Now just enter the desired mobile number and press "Find". If a holder is entered for the phone number, it is now displayed.
- Unfortunately, very few cell phone numbers are entered in the phone book. Therefore, the success rate is rather low. If the reverse search fails, Google is the next point of contact. You can find out more in the next paragraph.
Find out the owner of the cell phone number with Google
In order to determine the owner of the cell phone number with the help of Google, you should be a little familiar with the Google syntax. If you just search for the number, you will often find only part of the number or other undesirable results. Quotes are better:
- Find the unknown number and put quotation marks at the beginning and end: "0176 1234567". Google only outputs results that contain exactly this number.
- With a little luck, a homepage will appear that reveals something about the owner.
- First, ignore results that only show a series of numbers. Usually these are not very helpful. There is more information in the next paragraph.
Find out information about the cell phone owner in a database
If Google search has not yielded anything, databases that can collect information about all possible telephone numbers can sometimes help. They usually also appear on Google search.
- tellows.de collects information about cell phone numbers and landline numbers.
- Enter the mobile number you want to know more about.
- Scroll down the page and see the comments. Sometimes you will find very useful information about the owner of the cell phone number here.
- There are other databases with information about cell phone numbers. It is often the pages that appear first on Google search. Try your luck.
Call the mailbox to find out the owner of the cell phone number
Another trick to find out the owner of a cell phone number is to call the mailbox directly without ringing. The name of the owner is often mentioned in the announcement text. But remember: If you do not want to be recognized, you should suppress your own number. Follow these steps:
- Write down the cell phone number.
- The first four to five digits result in the area code. The provider can often be seen from this. We have compiled a list of area codes and the associated providers for you in this article.
- There are different mailbox codes for each network. Choose the right one and try the others if it doesn't work right away. The mailbox codes are: O2 / E-Plus: 33, Vodafone: 50, T-Mobile: 13.
- Insert the mailbox code between the area code and the number, for example "0176 50 12345678" for a Vodafone number.
- Caution is advised if none of the common area codes fits. Maybe it's not a cell phone number at all, but a payment trap.
- Tip: You can also call with a suppressed number and wait for someone to answer you by name.
CallerID apps reveal a lot about the owner of a cell phone number
To quickly find out information about the owner of an unknown mobile number in the future, you can install a CallerID app.
- When a call is made, these apps display all available information about the caller.
- For example, install Truecaller for Android or iOS.
Social networks and messenger apps
Social networks and messenger apps can also reveal amazing things about the identity of an unknown caller.
- Some users enter their cell phone number to verify their account on social networks such as Facebook or Twitter. A search on these platforms could shed light on this.
- It is often advisable to add the unknown number to the phone book and save it under your contacts. Users create accounts in messenger services such as WhatsApp. Sometimes they reveal a lot about themselves, for example their full names and pictures.
