Hard and soft reset: reset iPad
Related Videos: iPad tip - Soft Reset, restarting your iPad (May 2024).
If your iPad does not run the way you would like it to, you can use the hard and soft reset to reset your device. As similar as the two terms may sound, there are two completely different ways to reset your iPad.
Quick help for the iPad: Reset with the soft reset
If an app cannot be closed or the iPad reacts too slowly, you can quickly and easily perform a soft reset. Your iPad restarts and frees the RAM from unnecessary ballast.
- Before you start, you should have saved your work completely to avoid data loss. It is best to switch to the homescreen.
- Now hold down the power button (at the top of the iPad) and the home button at the same time until you see the Apple logo. Your iPad will now perform a soft reset and restart.
The last hope: hard reset the iPad
The hard reset should always remain the last solution and should only be carried out in an emergency. Here your iPad is completely reset to the delivery state. This will cause you to lose all apps and data on the device. A computer or Mac with iTunes installed is required.
- Start iTunes on your PC and connect the iPad to your computer via USB.
- A driver for your device may now be installed first. After a short time you should see a new tab "iPad" in the upper right corner of the iTunes window. Click on it to go to the synchronization menu.
- Optional: In the case of all cases, you should first click on "Backup now" in the "Backups" area and create a backup of your iPad. This way you can restore the current state later, should you need your data again.
- Start the hard reset by clicking the "Restore iPad" button (see screenshot). You can now back up your iPad in the window that opens. If you no longer want to do this, click "Don't save" to continue.
- Accept the last warning by clicking on "Restore" or "Update Restore." (varies depending on the iOS version). Remember that this will delete all of your data from the iPad.
- Now wait and see: The iPad is often restarted and the firmware restored. This process can take some time. Do not disconnect the USB connection or turn off the computer.
- After installation, you can set up your device again. It is advisable not to use a backup, but to set up the iPad from scratch.
