Generate HDR images with GIMP
Together with an HDR plugin, Gimp ensures that your photo looks better exposed with just a few clicks. Of course, this is not true "high dynamic range", but with the right values you can quickly achieve a good result. The only thing you need is 3 pictures of the same subject with different exposure times.
Install HDR plugin
First, you need to install the "Exposure Blend" plugin from JD Smith.
- Download the plugin from the developer's website.
- Copy the file into the folder "C: //Users/*USERNAME*/.gimp-2.8/scripts".
- In Gimp, click on "Filter" -> "Script Fu" -> "Refresh Scripts". Under "Filter" you should now find the new menu item "Exposure Blend".
Use HDR plugin
- Without opening the image in Gimp click on "Filter" -> "Exposure Blend" -> "Blend ...".
- Under "Normal Exposure" select the picture with normal exposure time.
- Under "Short" and "Long Exposure" you select the short and the long exposed image.
- If you like the values, click "OK" and the plugin will automatically create an HDR image from the three individual images.
The "Fake HDR" plugin creates an HDR-like image from just a single image. The result then just doesn't look quite as realistic. You can read about how to create a retro look in Gimp in this practical tip.
