Buy headset: USB or jack? A comparison
If you want to buy a new headset, there are two different connection options: USB or jack. You can find a comparison of the two in this practical tip.
Buy headset - the advantages and disadvantages of jack
The classic among the connections is still the jack. You connect a normal stereo headset via two jack connections for the headphones and the microphone. With a surround headset, you already need four jack connections.
- Advantage: The jack connection is widespread in electronic devices, so you can also use your headset as headphones for your cell phone or MP3 player.
- Advantage: USB headsets have an additional sound card integrated, which can often cause problems when it communicates with the player. Jack headsets, on the other hand, work with the internal sound card of your notebook or PC and are therefore significantly more compatible.
- Advantage: headsets with a jack connection are often cheaper than those with a USB connection. In the latter case, the sound card integrated in the headset or USB connection must be paid for.
- Disadvantage: The switch from headset to speakers or speakers is not automatic. To do this, you have to unplug the headset and put the boxes back in.
- Disadvantage: You need a 5.1 sound card for surround sound.
Buy headset - That speaks for and against USB
Headsets with a USB connection are becoming increasingly popular on the market. The sound card is integrated in these: You can enjoy 5.1 surround sound even without a complex sound card.
- Advantage: You can hear surround sound relatively easily, even without four connections.
- Advantage: headset and speakers no longer have to be changed. You can easily select what you want to hear about with one click.
- Disadvantage: The internal sound card in your laptop or PC becomes superfluous.
- Disadvantage: If there are not enough free USB ports, you may need to purchase an additional USB hub.
Buy headset - for whom is which connection worthwhile?
Finally, we have listed again which headset connection is worthwhile for you or not:
- Jack connection: If you already have a good sound card - possibly even with 5.1 sound - a headset with a jack connection is worthwhile.
- USB connection: If you are tired of constantly plugging between your speakers and your headset, we recommend a USB headset. This is also worthwhile if you only have a stereo sound card, but you want to enjoy surround sound.
