Radiator thermostat: numbers and symbols explained

Especially in winter - when the radiator is used more often - the question of the meaning of the numbers and symbols on the thermostat arises. Errors often arise. We therefore explain everything about the radiator thermostat.
Radiator thermostat: meaning of symbols and numbers
On the thermostat, which has been standardized and commercially available for around 30 years, there are a few symbols and the numbers from 1 to 5.
- Contrary to what many think, this regulator is not just an adjusting screw that regulates the water flow in the radiator, but also a thermostat.
- It ensures that this does not have to be readjusted again and again by keeping the temperature at a set, constant level thanks to a built-in mechanism.
- Means: Once set, the temperature remains constant until the heating is turned off again.
Thermostat: that's what the numbers mean
The numbers from 1 to 5 stand for different fixed temperatures. If these numbers are below the arrow, the corresponding temperature has been set. The following temperatures are fixed:
- 1: 12 ° C
- 2: 16 ° C
- 3: 20 ° C
- 4: 24 ° C
- 5: 28 ° C
Thermostat: that's what the symbols mean
Each digit on the thermostat is separated by three small lines.
Each of these lines is assigned a temperature rise of one degree Celsius. On many models there are other symbols in addition to the lines and numbers:
- Snowflake: frost protection setting (6 ° C)
- Crescent: night temperature (14 ° C)
- Sun: basic setting (20 ° C)
Heating faster and saving energy: how it works
Basically, a higher thermostat setting does not heat the room faster. You can only influence the final temperature.
- If you want to keep your room at a constant temperature, you only need to set the thermostat once. Adjustment is not necessary due to the built-in automatic.
- In order for the room to reach the desired temperature quickly and efficiently and to keep it constant, it is important that the heating is not blocked by curtains.
- Energy saving tip: Just lowering the room temperature by 1 ° C reduces your heating costs by up to 6%.
In the next article you will read how you can reduce your heating costs even further.
