Determine the origin of meat online
This practical tip shows you how you can determine the origin of meat online.
Meat: determine origin online
- The origin of meat can be found online on the website of the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety.
- Either search for the approval number directly using the quick search at the bottom of the website. Or you can use the individual categories, such as "game meat" or "fishery products", to get a list of all the companies stored in the database.
- If you use no or an old approval number for the search, you can use the advanced search function.
Organic meat, free range or factory farming?
- When you have determined the origin of your meat, you can use the search function on the oekolandbau.de website to find out whether the factory or butcher shop is an official organic company with the appropriate seal.
- You can find out from the business directory on the oeko-fair.de website whether the company in question offers ecological and fairly traded products. Note, however, that the database may not be complete. For example, a company may not be listed even though it offers eco-fair products.
