Find out the manufacturer using a Mac address
You can use the MAC address to find out the manufacturer of your computer. You can find out where you can find this hardware identifier and how you can use it to identify the manufacturer in this practical tip.
Find out the MAC address - so it'll work
You can usually find the MAC address on the network adapter. If this sticker is lost or illegible, you can do the following:
- Open the Windows command line with the Windows button (formerly "Start") and the entry "cmd".
- Enter "ipconfig / all" here and look for the "Physical address" in the "Ethernet adapter LAN connection" section. This is your MAC address.
How to find the manufacturer
- Go to the IEEE Standards Association website.
- Enter the first six digits of your MAC address here, separated by a minus (e.g. 00-26-82).
- You get exactly one hit: the manufacturer of your computer.
Tip: You can also find out the MAC address from your smartphone. Here we show you how it works in a few seconds.
