HTC Vive and Co: Using VR glasses as glasses wearers - is that possible?
Whether HTC Vive, Oculus Rift or Google Cardboard - with all VR glasses, the question for glasses wearers is whether you can wear the huge devices over normal glasses. We will tell you which models have problems and give you tips on how you can also enjoy VR as a spectacle wearer.
Use VR glasses as glasses wearers - is that possible?
Of course, the developers of the various VR glasses also know that many people rely on normal glasses. Therefore, all glasses are basically designed to fit easily over normal glasses. The VR experience can succeed even without glasses.
- The reason for this is that the VR glasses screen is right in front of your eyes. The sharpness of the 3D image can then be adjusted for all glasses, which is why sharp vision is possible even with high diopter numbers and despite astigmatism.
- In our test with the Oculus Rift, which has special lenses for myopia, this worked amazingly well. Only with jerky head movements, in which the glasses shifted and the angle of inclination on the display changed, did it become blurred.
- A general statement for all glasses wearers cannot be made here. It is therefore best to test for yourself whether you can see clearly even without your normal glasses.
- If you don't want to work without glasses, you can either leave your normal glasses or use contact lenses. The former is amazingly comfortable thanks to the large brackets of the VR glasses. With contact lenses, on the other hand, you should be careful and don't forget to blink - due to the close screen, the eyes dry out easily.
VR glasses for glasses wearers: these are the best models
As already mentioned, there is no general prescription for glasses wearers. You have to test yourself whether you see clearly with or without your normal glasses and whether the VR glasses are compatible with your own frame. Nevertheless, we would like to give you a brief assessment of the most common VR models:
- Oculus Rift: Thanks to various lenses for normal and short-sighted people and the adjustable display, the sharpness of the Oculus Rift can be freely adjusted. Due to the large amount of space, even glasses with large glasses fit under the frame. Most glasses wearers should have no problems here.
- PlayStation VR: The Sony glasses have a special harness that shifts the load to the back of your head. As a result, nothing presses on the ears or nose, which is why normal glasses fit perfectly.
- HTC Vive: The sharpness of the HTC Vive can also be adjusted to your own wishes using a control. In addition, this model also offers enough space between the eyes and the display, so normal glasses should not be a problem.
