HTTP 404 error - what to do?
If you click a link and receive an HTTP 404 error, it is because the page or file does not exist. Either the operator deleted the entire website or only a file or part of the page.
Possibility 1: complete website deleted
If the status code 404 is displayed because the entire page has been deleted, there is nothing you can do. The website operator no longer wants the page to be accessed.
Option 2: File or subpage no longer online
Status code 404 is also displayed when accessing a single file or subpage of a website that does not exist or no longer exists. Now try the following:
- Open the start page by deleting everything after the domain (.de, .com, .org, etc.)
- If that doesn't work either, the page has probably been deleted or the link contains an error. Enter the page name into a search engine to find out more.
Many website operators have programmed their page in such a way that instead of outputting error 404, a redirection to an entertaining 404 error page is activated. An image gallery with the most creative 404 error pages can be found here.
