Sometimes you may get an "HTTP 500" or "Internal Server" error in your browser. We'll explain what it's all about.
HTTP Error 500 - Fix Internal Server Error: How does it work?
All HTTP errors with the prefix "5" - for example "500" or "502" - are server-side error codes. This usually means that there is not much you can do on the client side to fix the error.
- Error 500 in particular is a catch-all error. The server outputs error 500 for all unknown causes of the error. This makes the error code very imprecise. It is up to the server administrator to specify the cause more precisely.
- In rare cases, a page that has not been cached correctly by your browser can also cause such an error. To make sure that the error was not caused by your browser, clear your cache and delete your cookies. We have put together instructions for Chrome, Firefox and Safari.
- If you have cleared your cache without the website subsequently developing correctly, you should wait first and try again after a few minutes. If the error still appears after several hours, you can contact the server admin.
- The error usually contains an email address where you can reach the admin. You could be particularly successful with smaller websites because admins are not always online to check the status of the page.
- If you have contacted the operator of the page, you can only wait and hope that the error will be fixed soon.
Causes of an HTTP error 500
The error mainly arises when processing your request, which prevents the website from being run. There are several reasons for this:
- The cause of the error can be a faulty .htaccess file or a script or if a path is set incorrectly.
- Even if there is insufficient memory for a process, the request to the website cannot be carried out.
- If the permissions for an execution or a file are not set correctly, a 505 error also occurs
