Everyone knows the HTTP in the address bar, but only a few know when HTTPS appears and where the difference is. We clarify it.
HTTP and HTTPS: what do you need it for?
- The Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP for short, is used to load websites from the server into your web browser.
- The Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure, HTTPS for short, has the same task, but does it encrypted and can therefore establish a bug-proof connection between the operator of the website and your browser.
- The HTTPS process is supported by all browsers and is therefore a security technology that does not have to be installed. Anyone who is on your network can monitor your surfing behavior on HTTP websites with some effort. The connections are encrypted on HTTPS websites.
- You can recognize an HTTPS page by the fact that, on the one hand, the above-mentioned lettering is in the address line of the browser, and on the other hand, by the locked lock (see picture)
- Common websites only use the HTTP method. However, when it comes to personal data, such as online banking or in online shops, it has HTTPS encryption.
- Conclusion: A website on which you have to provide sensitive data such as your account details should be encrypted using HTTPS. Otherwise, it is very likely a dubious provider.
