You have probably heard the phrase "I kiss your eye" before: But what does that actually mean? We explain it to you in this article.
"I kiss your eye" - what?
If someone tells you that they want to kiss your eye or your eyes, they don't mean (in most cases) literally:
- "I kiss your eye" is a slang phrase used to express gratitude. For example, if a buddy gives you a drink or someone does you a favor.
- This sentence can also be taken literally: there are supposed to be people who kiss their partner on the eyelids.
- Presumably "I kiss your eye" comes from the Turkish or Arabic-speaking world, whose languages are known to express things in a very flowery way.
- Another theory would be that the kiss on the eyes was handed down from the Middle Ages: Since the eyes are the window to the soul, one could show his affection by kissing it.
- "I kiss your eye" was the 2018 Youth Word of the Year poll. However, the word "Ehrenmann" won.
