Make iCloud secure - so it'll work
Numerous pictures of iCloud users were stolen by hackers in summer 2014. We show you how to make your account secure.
Make iCloud secure - password and security questions
The biggest weak point of any account is the password. If you created your password a few years ago, you should change it. Back then, the security requirements for passwords were still quite low. Therefore, choose a password that is as secure as possible.
- Open the website for managing the Apple ID and log in using the "Manage your Apple ID" button.
- If your old password no longer meets the new requirements, you will be prompted to create a new password directly.
- Then go to the "Password and Security" category on the left.
- Here you can not only change your password, but also leave your date of birth and answer a security question. All of this protects your Apple ID.
- Note: If possible, lie when answering the security question. Questions about your hometown or your job can also be found on your Facebook profile with just a few clicks.
Make iCloud secure: two-factor authentication
The big iCloud hack in summer 2014 was only possible due to the weak point in the system. The accounts were hacked by stupidly trying out with a brute force attack. If you use a really secure password and two-factor authentication, you are well protected. This authentication protects you from unauthorized purchases on new devices, as well as unwanted changes and loss of Apple ID.
- Open the Apple ID management website again and go back to the "Password and Security" category.
- After you have answered the security question, you will find the "First steps" link under "Two-step confirmation".
- Read the notes and warnings carefully and confirm them with "Next" and "First Steps".
- Now you have to wait exactly three days. You will then receive a message by email when the time is up. The waiting time prevents that the hacker does not carry out the authentication.
- Repeat steps 1 to 3 after the waiting time. Enter your cell phone number using the "Add phone number" button.
- You will receive a code via SMS, which you must enter in the browser. The recovery key will then be displayed. The two-factor authentication is now complete.
- Note: If a doubtful action is carried out with your Apple ID, you will receive an SMS with a code. You must confirm the action with this code. You should definitely print out or write down the recovery key. In case of doubt, it serves to save your account. If you forget your password and key, your Apple ID will be lost forever.
In the next practical tip, we will show you how to delete your Apple ID.
