The iMac is a powerful all-in-one computer from Apple. If necessary, you can also use it as a screen. This is useful if you are working on a MacBook in parallel and need a larger display for it. In this practical tip, we will show you how to proceed and what you need to consider.
iMac as a screen: which models are compatible?
First of all, it is important that not all models of the iMac series can be operated in the so-called screen synchronization mode. The way the screen is connected also differs:
- Via Mini-DisplayPort: iMac 27 ", end of 2009 | iMac 27", middle of 2010
- Per Thunderbolt: iMac mid 2011 | iMac mid 2012 - mid 2014 (all sizes)
- Expressly not compatible: older models, as well as the model with a 5K display at the end of 2015
Use iMac in screen sync mode
There is a simple key combination to set up your iMac as an external monitor:
- Start up the iMac and connect it to the other device (via Mini-DisplayPort or Thunderbolt).
- Then press the [cmd] + [F2] keys on your iMac.
- The iMac screen should now be recognized as the second monitor of the connected device and show its desk.

- If you want to exit the screen synchronization mode later, press the [cmd] + [F2] keys again.
- Tip: If you have connected your MacBook to the iMac, for example, it also functions as a practical docking station. You can use all connections of the iMac.
