Format iMac without CD - Here's how it works
With OS X Mavericks, you can easily format your iMac without a CD. This will format your iMac and then reload it thanks to an integrated backup volume. In this practical tip you will learn how it works.
Prepare iMac for formatting
First, make sure that you back up important and sensitive data before formatting. Ideally, copy them to a USB stick or burn the data to a CD / DVD.
- Start your iMac
- Click the Apple logo in the top left corner of the Apple system tray and then click "Restart ...".
- When your iMac is down and restarting, press the CMD and R buttons at the same time.
- You are now in the recovery menu.
Format iMac and set up again
After preparing and restarting the Mac's selection menu, you can start formatting and reload Mac OS.
- In the menu, select a network for an Internet connection, if none already exists.
- Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
- Find your starting volume on the left and then press the "Delete" button.
- Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
- Next, enter a name and then press "Delete".
- As soon as the deletion has been completed, click on "Disk Utility" and then on "Exit Disk Utility".
- Finally, all you have to do is click "Reinstall OS X" and then press "Continue". Follow the further instructions to complete the installation.
