iMac: Retrofit SSD - how it works
With an SSD, you can significantly improve the iMac's startup process. If you want to retrofit these, only a few steps are necessary. In this practical tip, we will show you exactly how to proceed.
Retrofitting an SSD hard drive on the iMac - so it'll work
Before you start, you need the Torx T10 and Torx T8 screwdrivers. You will also need a suction window so that you can lift the display.
- Now remove all cables from the iMac and lay it down with the screen facing up.
- Place the suction cup in the middle of the screen and make sure it is firmly seated. Now you can gently pull to detach the glass from the display.
- Once you have removed the glass, you now need the Torx T10 screwdriver to remove a total of four screws, two on each side.
- Now pull the display up a little until a small cable appears on the right side. Carefully pull it out.
- Now you have to raise the display further to remove another cable on the left side. In the middle you will find two more cables, which you can also remove. You can then carefully remove the display.
- In addition to the built-in hard drive, you will find a cover that you can remove with the T10 screwdriver.
- Now use the T8 screwdriver to loosen the last two screws of the bracket before you insert the SSD and secure it with a total of four screws. Then connect the hard drive and carefully insert the display.
- After you have reconnected all four cables, you can reinsert the display and fix it with the screws.
- Finally, reinsert the glass of the display until it is held in place by the magnets.
