Ginger can be stored in different ways. Depending on the form in which you buy the spicy-tart tuber, you have to use different methods to keep the healthy root fresh.
Always keep fresh ginger in the fridge
Ginger is probably one of the oldest and most popular spices in the world. Confucius already idolized the flavorful ginger because of its healthy healing properties. In order to keep the tuber's special aroma and healthy active ingredients for as long as possible after purchase, there are a number of things you need to consider.
- You can buy ginger as root in the supermarket, pickled in pieces in syrup and dried in whole or ground form.
- Unpeeled, fresh ginger roots stay in the refrigerator in the food storage box for three to four weeks, in the food storage bag even longer. It is important that they always stay dry.
- Dried ginger should always be kept airtight in a cool and dark place.
- Since ground ginger loses its aroma very quickly, you should consume it as soon as possible.
- Pickled ginger, on the other hand, remains airtight for almost unlimited time.
The older the tuber, the more intense the taste
When you buy fresh ginger, the taste of the tuber changes over time. Dried and ground ginger also tastes different than fresh ginger root.
- Ginger tastes slightly sweet and spicy-spicy. Fresh ginger tastes milder and fruity than dried and ground ginger.
- The older the tuber, the sharper and more intense the taste. If you want more spiciness for your dishes, it is best to use older tubers or ground ginger.
- Ginger can be easily combined with other spices such as coriander, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg or pepper.
- Ginger goes best with sweet and sour salads, meat and poultry dishes, but also with gingerbread, fruit salads and milk rice.
- The tropical tuber not only brings many benefits in terms of taste, but ginger also supports your health.
